[Mako led the way up to the attic, holding onto two of the grocery bags. Asami just had the third, but he absently reached out a hand to help her up once he reached the top of the steps.]

I don't think it's changed much from when you were last here. Sorry if it's a little bare for your taste.

[ she wrinkles her nose at him, reaching out to playfully jab at his side with her elbow when he gets close enough for the vegetables. ]

[ she washes her hands off at the nearby sink, sobering up a little when he mentions the game. ]

Yeah... on my own, basically. I'll probably have to get a job, too.

[sober moods will not do in this house, young lady]

A job? I'd pay to see that.

[ she shoots him a look, brows raised. ]

I'm not just a spoiled rich kid, Mako. I do have some life skills, you know. [ of course now she's just teasing back, walking over to poke him in the chest lightly. ] I'd probably get promoted before you at any job.

[alwaysbrooding]

[there's the spitfire he knows and loves?]

[He's turned to face her, one hand on his hip and the other still dutifully stirring] Is that an actual challenge, Sato? We both know that I've got more experience in that department.

[ she rolls her eyes, sliding her own hand over a hip jutting out. he knows as well as anyone how competitive she can get. ]

I'm a fast learner, hotshot. I'd run circles around you.

[alwaysbrooding]

[Yeah. They're cut from the same cloth, pretty much.]

I could let you do that once in a while if your ego needs the boost.

[vavavroom]

[ and she definitely isn't used to losing. ]

My ego? [ she scoffs. ] After dinner, you and me. I'll even let you choose the game.

[She hasn't spent enough time with him then.]

O-ho, you're on. But an hour or so after dinner. Wouldn't want either of us cramping up in the middle of things. [mama bear mode activate as he checks on the soup.] Can you pass along some bowls? The noodles are pretty much cooked.

[vavavroom]

[ another roll of her eyes, but her lips are still curved in amusement. mix it up a little, mako, gosh! ]

Are you sure you want to do that? You won't have any excuses to fall back on when I leave you in my dust.

[ but she does as she's asked, waltzing past him to retrieve some bowls in a nearby drawer so she can hand them to him. ]

[he has a process okay]

Neither will you. Fair is fair. [He gets the bowls from her, smirking.] Take a seat on the couch, I'll bring the food in a second.

[ a lame process.

but okay, heading to the couch now, where she sits fairly leisurely, despite her usual proper behavior. boots off, legs up and tucked under her skirt as she leans against an armrest. it's a little too easy to be so comfortable around mako again. it should frighten her, actually, but she's too busy feeling good about it. ]

I don't think I've had an honest-to-goodness homecooked meal since you cooked for our anniversary dinner...

[alwaysbrooding]

[adorkable you mean.]

That long, huh.

[Not that it was actually a long time ago... but eh, details. He feels for her though. Living in a big, shiny mansion wasn't really fun if you didn't have someone to share it with. It's probably a good thing that he's bringing the food over right now... otherwise he would have been tempted to give her a hug or something.]

[ that would have been... welcomed awkward...

she reaches out for her bowl as soon as he gets close enough to hand her one and thanks him for it. ]

Yeah. I miss it, sometimes.

[A guilty feeling twists and turns somewhere inside his chest.]

Yeah... sorry about that. [they never did get to have a clearing-the-air talk about their relationship, did they? Mako quietly takes the seat on the opposite side of the couch. It was L-shaped so at least they could face each other properly.] Wish I could take it back so things wouldn't be so weird...

[ asami's hands curl around the bowl she holds, nestled warm over her lap. she doesn't look up at him, even though she very easily could. she'd been wanting this talk for so long, but now that it's come... she kind of wants to curl up away from it. ]

It's fine, Mako. [ she sounds more resigned than anything. ] You can't help what you feel. I just wish I was--

[ enough, she'd been about to say, but that's dipping into issues she isn't sure she should be getting into. she hadn't been enough for her father, and she hadn't been enough for mako. now she's wondering if she'd be enough for future industries. but those are her problems - far too much to be dumping on mako, so she gives a rough shake of her head and backtracks from that line of conversation. ]

It's a little weird now, yeah, but we'll be okay. I know we will.

[alwaysbrooding]

[Just wish you were... what? Mako is frowning into his own bowl, at the reflection of himself that was frowning back and giving him no answers.

He figured it out himself though. Sort of.

Asami, despite her answer (which was neatly worded, he noticed), wasn't very happy. Well, of course she wouldn't be. He wasn't happy either... but Asami's unhappiness felt sort of different.]

I guess you're right... [he munches on a piece of vegetable, swallowing before talking again.] So, uh, how are things with you? Apart from the game stuff, and all that.

[vavavroom]

[ changes in conversation usually only ever happen when the other party is uncomfortable, and asami sort of berates herself for being the cause of it. she bites down on the inside of her cheek, hard, as if in reprimand, before glancing back up at mako with a forced smile. ]

Great, actually. My mun's got a lot of plans and.. she's pretty excited about this round... She's basically just been preparing - headcanon, the idle meme here and there...
